A US woman says she wants answers after her son was shot and killed by police while he was sitting in his wheelchair.

Police were reportedly called to a street in Wilmington, in the US state of Delaware, on Wednesday after reports that a man had shot himself.

Video footage posted online shows a number of officers approaching the man, thought to be 28-year-old Jeremy McDole, who is sitting in a wheelchair on the side of the road.

"Show me your hands," one officer can be heard yelling. "Drop the gun!"

The officers can be seen advancing on the man with their guns drawn and telling him to raise his hands in the air.

Mr McDole can be seen moving in his chair and eventually reaching into his jeans. It is not clear what he is doing. Police then fire multiple shots at him, causing him to fall out of his wheelchair.

Police Chief Bobby Cummings said Mr McDole was "armed with a handgun" and the officers believed that he was reaching into his pocket to grab it when they shot him.

At a news conference following the incident, Mr McDole's mother, Phyllis McDole, rejected this account.

"He was in a wheelchair, paralysed from the waist down. There's video showing that he didn't pull a weapon...I need answers," she said.

Mr Cummings said the outcome was not what anyone had hoped for.

"I assure you that not one of those officers intended to take anyone's life that day," he said.

SBS has not independently verified the footage but Mr Cummings said it appeared to be authentic.
