Motorcyclist dies after hitting roo on M4

A motorcyclist has died in Sydney's west after hitting a kangaroo while in the state's south a motorcyclist has crashed while avoiding a fox, closing a highway.

A motorcyclist has died after hitting a kangaroo on the M4 motorway in Sydney's west.

The 38-year-old rider was found with critical injuries near the centre railing of the westbound lanes of the motorway 10km from Penrith in the early hours of Tuesday.

The man died at the scene and the body of a kangaroo was found nearby, police said.

Meanwhile, a motorcyclist escaped serious injury after swerving to avoid a fox on the Princes Highway near Gerringong on the state's south coast but hit a car in the process, closing southbound lanes.

The motorcyclist hit an oncoming car which caused a fire to break out about 5.10am. Diversions are place for motorists.
