Mourning Fenech guides boxer to victory

Jeff Fenech says his late mother would have wanted him to stick by young Sydney boxer Brock Jarvis for Sunday's 'Battle of Brisbane' undercard bout.

Australian fighters prospered and Manny Pacquiao's fellow Filipino Jerwin Ancajas retained his world title on the undercard of the Pacquiao Jeff Horn card in Brisbane on Sunday.

Ancajas kept his IBF junior bantamweight title with a seventh round stoppage of Japan's Teiru Kinoshita, whose right eye was almost shut by the end of the one-sided bout.

Canberra's David Toussaint and Queenslander Damien Hooper scored excellent wins over highly credentialed overseas opponents, while the Jeff Fenech-trained unbeaten bantamweight Brock Jarvis scored a quick win a day after Fenech's mother died.

London 2012 Olympian Hooper took a unanimous decision victory against previously unbeaten Russian Umar Salamov to win the WBO and IBF international light heavyweight titles.

ACT southpaw Toussaint scored a split points win over American Shane Mosley Jr, the son of the legendary fighter of the same name.

Victorian junior welterweight Brent Dames scored a points win over Manny Pacquiao's first cousin Jonel Dapidran.

The only Australian undercard fighter to lose was Queenslander Jarrett Owen, who suffered a third-round stoppage loss to Ireland's former world and European champion and Commonwealth Games gold medallist Michael Conlan.

New South Welshman Jarvis improved his record to 10-0 with a first-round knockout of Indonesian bantamweight Caem Rasmanudin.

Fenech's mother, Mary, died at the age of 81 on Saturday night after a battle with emphysema.

Three-time world champion Fenech said she would have wanted him in Jarvis's corner at Suncorp Stadium the very next morning.

"My mum told me she was going to die days ago. She didn't die until last night," Fenech said.

"I'm sure my mum would want me to be here with the kid who needs me.

"It's been hard, I didn't eat last night, didn't really sleep, but I'm pretty happy today for Brock, and I'm sad about what happened with my family."

Jarvis said it was a "dream come true" to have Fenech as his trainer but it was a piece of advice from another former great that helped shape the victory.

Roberto Duran told Jarvis at the weigh-in to eat an ice cream spider - Coca-Cola mixed with vanilla ice cream - like he did before his fights.

"He said, you must have it, it makes you strong," Fenech said.
