SBS Chief Political Correspondent Karen Middleton says Opposition Leader Tony Abbott made the right decision when he moved Barnaby Joyce out of the shadow finance ministry.

The Nationals senator was handed the Coalition's water portfolio after being moved out of finance, a role in which he was struggling, Ms Middleton says.

The federal government pounced on the decision to remove Mr Joyce from finance, with Prime Minister Kevin Rudd saying Mr Abbott showed 'bad judgement' by giving the senator the portfolio in the first place.

Victorian MP Andrew Robb is the Coalition's new finance spokesman.
