MP Cash condemns Trad violence comment

Keyser Trad has been condemned over comments suggesting the Koran condoned violence against women as a last resort.

Federal Minister for Women Michaelia Cash says she will contact Muslim leader Keyser Trad over comments that his religion allowed for a husband to beat his wife as a last resort but that it should be avoided.

Mr Trad, president of the Australian Federation of Islamic Councils, conceded in a TV interview that a verse in the Koran condoned domestic violence but as a last resort.

He has since apologised and said his words were clumsy.

Ms Cash said she believed Mr Trad's words were considered and such views about violence against women or men were unacceptable in modern Australia.

"Anyone who's holds those views quite frankly needs to give them a reassessment very quickly," she told reporters.

Mr Trad had described the verse as intending to counsel men who were angry to be calm before considering using violence against women.

"What this verse is saying is playing on the psychology of the man saying violence is a last resort," Mr Trad told Sky News's Andrew Bolt.

"The first thing you must do is counselling."

Immigration Minister Peter Dutton said he thought the views would be unacceptable for the vast majority of the Islamic community.
