MP citizenship forms flawed, saga will drag into next year: Greens

The Australian Greens say the citizenship issue will drag into next year because the disclosure process has holes in it.

Australian Greens Richard di Natale says the dual citizenship issue is likely to drag on well into next year.

The citizenship issue won't be resolved by MPs lodging paperwork with parliament, because not enough information has been sought, the Australian Greens say.

Senators are putting the finishing touches to their family history and citizenship details which they must lodge no later than 5pm AEDT on Friday.

The details will be published on the Parliament House website at midday on December 4.
Greens leader Richard Di Natale said he was satisfied his team was clear of any problems under section 44 of the constitution, which makes dual citizens ineligible for parliament.

"But I suspect there will be a few other nervous MPs in this building right now," he told reporters in Canberra on Monday.

The questions had not been framed well enough to avoid future doubts.

"There are so many holes you could drive a truck through it," he said of the form received by senators.

"We're basically being asked to do what we did when we nominated for election, with a few additions."

Senator Di Natale said the issue was likely to drag on well into next year.

Senators have been given the option of having personal information about family members to be blacked out of their published forms.

They have also been offered assistance to contact the UK Home Office if issues about British citizenship arise.
