Government frontbencher Angus Taylor has welcomed an apology from Fairfax Media over a report linking him to the NSW Liberal party donations controversy.

"I understand relevant articles have been or are being withdrawn from publication and I thank Fairfax for this," Mr Taylor, who is the Assistant Minister for Cities, said in a statement.

The NSW Electoral Commission is refusing to pay the Liberals more than $4.4 million until it reveals the secret donors who poured about $700,000 into the party's coffers ahead of the 2011 state election.
