Federal lower house MPs have backed a motion that asks them to seek the views of their constituents on same-sex marriage.
MPs voted 73-72 to support a motion by Australian Greens MP Adam Bandt that was amended by Labor backbencher Stephen Jones, AAP reported.
Indpendent MPs Tony Windsor and Rob Oakeshott supported the move, while Bob Katter did not.
But a change to the Marriage Act appears a long way off.

Labor still opposes changing the Marriage Act to recognise same-sex unions.
Prime Minister Julia Gillard has said it's up to the party's national conference, likely next year, to change policy.
