MPs draw federal by-election battle lines

With candidates for the Longman by-election locked in, federal MPs from the Sunshine State are drawing the battle lines in Canberra.

A looming by-election showdown between a "gentle giant" and a casualty of the dual-citizenship crisis is firing up Queensland politicians in Canberra.

Queensland's Liberal National Party on Tuesday announced Trevor Ruthenberg would front up against Labor's Susan Lamb in the Longman by-election.

"He is a personable gentle giant," said Queensland coalition senator Amanda Stoker of Mr Ruthenberg, a former state MP.

"He's got a really strong background in the community, directly in the area of Longman."

Senator Stoker spruiked Mr Ruthenberg's links to the Scouts and Lutheran Church communities, saying he would ensure people's economic freedom.

But Queensland Labor MP for Herbert, Cathy O'Toole said the coalition blew its chance of taking Longman at the 2016 federal election.

"From a Labor perspective, we don't take any election campaign lying down," Ms O'Toole told reporters in Canberra on Wednesday.

Ms Lamb is recontesting the seat she took from coalition junior minister Wyatt Roy in 2016 after resigning due to a cloud over her citizenship status.

She held the seat with a margin of less than one per cent.

"I have no doubt that she will run an excellent campaign and she should win that campaign," Ms O'Toole said.

The Speaker of the House of Representatives Tony Smith is yet to announce the date of by-elections in Longman, Braddon, Perth, Fremantle and Mayo.

Candidates for the by-elections will have to publicly register their citizenship details to ensure they are eligible to run.

Meanwhile, independent MP Bob Katter is joining Centre Alliance MP Rebekha Sharkie on the campaign trail in Mayo on Wednesday.
