Sixty-five federal MPs including senior ministers have been forced to pay back nearly $100,000 in wrongly-claimed family travel expenses.

News Limited is reporting that the MPs who include Sustainability and Population minister Tony Burke have repaid air fares and car transport in the past five years.

Mr Burke made 15 separate repayments involving family travel totalling nearly seven thousand dollars.

Liberal MP Dennis Jensen was forced to pay over $13,000 after admitting he made a mistake claiming for family travel.

And Prime Minister Julia Gillard made 10 repayments totalling $438 for taxi fares which she said were "inadvertently" paid by a family member.

Gillard says the money was repaid immediately after it was identified.

The details were obtained under Freedom of Information laws.
