Mudslide kills 10 people in China

Ten people are dead and 12 more are buried after heavy rains triggered a mudslide in China's mountainous southwest.

Ten people have died in a mudslide and 12 others remain buried under debris in a mountainous region in China's southwest, the official Xinhua News Agency says.

The mudslide buried 29 people in a village in Guizhou province early on Friday.

By late afternoon, rescuers recovered 10 bodies and pulled out seven villagers alive, Xinhua said.

Heavy rains have drenched the mountainous region, increasing the danger of mudslides.

Elsewhere in southern and eastern China, torrential rainfall in June left at least 47 people dead or missing, according to China's Ministry of Civil Affairs.

A freak tornado killed 98 people in the eastern Chinese city of Yancheng on June 23.
