Cameron Munster is free to claim the Kangaroos' No.6 jersey after escaping suspension for the "brain fart" that saw him charged after he kicked Sydney Roosters' Joseph Manu in the NRL grand final.

Munster was charged with contrary conduct for lashing out with his boot at Manu in the 78th minute of Melbourne's grand-final loss to the Sydney Roosters, earning him a $1400 fine but no weeks on the sideline.

Had he been hit with a striking or kicking charge, it would have resulted in an automatic ban unless he was found not guilty at the NRL judiciary.

The incident capped off an unhappy night for the 24-year-old, who made history for all the wrong reasons at ANZ Stadium.

He earlier became the first player to be sin-binned in a grand final in the NRL-era for a professional foul on Roosters captain Jake Friend in the Storm's 21-6 loss.

He then finished the match in the bin again, admonished for putting his boot and shin into the Roosters centre's head as he got up from making a tackle in the dying minutes.

"I deserved the second (sin-bin)," Munster told reporters at Melbourne's team hotel on Monday morning.

"I was obviously frustrated and it was a bit of a brain fart, but in saying that I really can't explain what happened.

"I said sorry to Manu after the game and I know there's going to be a lot of keyboard warriors saying some stuff to me but I'm not like that."

Munster was on Monday named in the Kangaroos' 19-man squad for this month's Tests against New Zealand and Tonga, with Luke Keary only named as cover in case the Storm five-eighth faced a heavier charge.

Melbourne's best player in 2018, Munster is expected to start at five-eighth for Australia as part of a generational change, after the retirements of both Johnathan Thurston and Cooper Cronk in the halves.

Michael Morgan is unavailable with a season-ending bicep injury, while James Maloney is out due to a neck injury.
