Murali helping Aussie spinners

Muttiah Muralitharan is helping Australian spinners Nathan Lyon and Steve O'Keefe ahead of the three-Test series against Sri Lanka.

Australia's cricketers have called on the help of old foe Muttiah Muralitharan as they look to overcome their struggles on sub-continental wickets.

Test wickets record holder Muralitharan has been assisting the Australian team - especially spinners Nathan Lyon and Steve O'Keefe - since they arrived in Sri Lanka to prepare for the three-Test series starting later this month.

"He's obviously got a lot of experience here in Sri Lanka, he took a truckload of wickets," captain Steve Smith said.

"He's helping our spinners out so it's great to have someone like that on board with us during the series to give us that insight."

The off-spinner threatened to never visit Australia again in 2004 after his controversial action brought with it a large amount of abuse from Australian crowds.

He was also no-balled for chucking at the Boxing Day Test on his first tour of Australia in 1995, before he copped the same treatment in a one-day international in 1999.

However those old wounds now appear to have healed, given he also helped former captain Michael Clarke in mid-2014.

Back under coach Darren Lehmann, who missed the recent West Indies tri-series, the Australians have arrived two weeks before the first Test in an effort to give themselves plenty of chance to adapt to the Sri Lankan wickets.

"Murali loves the game of cricket and I'm sure he will work with other teams as well, he's a fantastic coach," Lehmann said.

"To have the expertise to talk about the way the wickets might play ... and how Sri Lanka play and how we should play ... it's pretty important."

Australia last played in Sri Lanka when they won a three-Test series 1-0, however have lost six of their last seven Tests against India and Pakistan on turning wickets.
