Murder charge after NSW assault death

A man previously charged with the serious assault of an NSW woman is facing a murder charge after she died from her injuries.

A 30-year-old man has been charged with murder after a woman died two weeks after an alleged serious assault in a shopping centre carpark in NSW's Hunter region.

Police say the 37-year-old woman was knocked to the ground by the man at a shopping centre on Molly Morgan Drive in East Maitland shortly before midnight on December 7.

She was treated for severe head injuries at John Hunter Hospital but died on Saturday.

The 30-year-old man, who was arrested at the scene and charged with recklessly causing grievous bodily harm and grievous bodily harm, has now been charged with murder.

He has been refused bail and is due to appear at Port Macquarie Local Court on Sunday.
