A Gold Coast woman found dead in a car is believed to have been killed by her partner, who then committed suicide, although police say they are keeping an open mind.

The bodies of 46-year-old Dave Lee and Melinda Horner, 36, were found by friends of the couple at their Burleigh Waters home on Monday afternoon.

Ms Horner's body was found in a car, Mr Lee's inside the property.

Police say only the woman's death is being treated as suspicious and they are not looking for anyone else in connection to the deaths.

Detective Inspector Marc Hogan said the case could be a murder-suicide but detectives were not ruling out other possibilities.

"We look at all avenues - that is one we are looking at," Det Insp Hogan told reporters on Tuesday.

"We keep an open mind to everything until we're absolutely 100 per cent sure of what we are doing and what we are looking at."

Det Insp Hogan described the deaths as tragic and disturbing, and admitted they had taken a toll on officers involved.

"We live and work in the community," he said.

"When you see this sort of thing and you see the reaction, in particular what went on last night at the dwelling and in the street with friends and neighbours (of the couple), it does bring home the importance of the work we do."

Friends have started leaving tributes on Mr Lee's Facebook page.

"Can't believe you're gone mate!! I'm in total shock! Rest easy Dave!!" wrote Ricky Norman.

Another friend, Steve Sutcliffe, spoke of his shock.

"Woken this morning to the shocking news, R.I.P. Mate, my thoughts are with your family."

Forensic officers remain at the scene on Tuesday afternoon and a report is being prepared for the coroner.
