Murdered bikie 'got what he deserved'

The funeral for former bikie boss Mick Hawi, shot dead in an execution-style hit outside a Sydney gym, is likely to be held next week.

The mother of a man beaten to death by Mahmoud "Mick" Hawi says the former bikie boss "got what he deserved" when he was killed in a targeted shooting in a Sydney car park.

The notorious former leader of the Comancheros died in St George Hospital on Thursday evening after he was shot multiple times outside Rockdale's Fitness First around midday.

Fredericka Bromwich, the mother of Hells associate Anthony Zervas who was beaten to death with a bollard in 2009, said karma had come back to haunt Hawi.

"Mick Hawi got what he deserved and good on those boys that did it," Ms Bromwich told the Seven Network on Friday.

"It is karma because what you do in life comes back to haunt you."

Hawi served time in prison for his role in the killing of Zervas, who was bashed with a bollard during a brawl between the rival clubs at Sydney Airport.

Meanwhile a manhunt continues for the men who shot Hawi in his luxury Mercedes four-wheel drive. NSW police announced the formation of Strikeforce Amirs to investigate the murder.

AAP understands Hawi will be buried in the Muslim section of Rookwood Cemetery next week.

The Al-Zahra mosque is waiting to find out when the 37-year-old's body will be released from the morgue following a post-mortem examination.

"That might take two to three days," mosque spokesman Ibrahim Ghacham told AAP on Friday.

"Police will look after the security (for the funeral). We (also) have at least seven or eight security (guards) at the mosque."

Detectives are worried there could be potential revenge attacks.

They appealed on Friday for any video footage people may have taken near the gym.

"Investigators are seeking any vision from dash cams or mobile phones taken yesterday (Thursday) in the vicinity of Chandler and Ashton streets, the Princes Highway, Rockdale Plaza Drive and the plaza car park," NSW Police said in a statement.

A bouquet of white flowers was placed outside the gym, which will remain closed over the weekend.

A paramedic's medical kit remained inside the gym's locked entrance while multiple vehicles in the car park were still coated in fingerprint dust.

Outside Hawi's home in nearby Bexley on Friday, a group of young men standing between parked luxury cars kept watch.

Hawi's 4WD was peppered with at least six bullets in the daylight hit, described by police as "serious, brutal and callous".

A Mercedes station wagon was set alight on a nearby street shortly after the attack.

Two men in dark clothing were captured on CCTV fleeing the area.

Members of the public order riot squad conducted line searches of Chandler Street in Kogarah on Friday morning.

Detectives are investigating Hawi's underworld links and who may have wanted him dead and working to prevent any retaliatory attacks.

It was reported he may have had a bounty on his head and there may have been bad blood between him and current Comanchero leader Mark Buddle.
