Sarah Murdoch was close to tears when she accidently announced the wrong winner at the finale of Fox TV's Australia's Next Top Model on Tuesday.

In a bizzare twist while live to air, the Top Model host declared Sydney girl Kelsey Martinovich had taken first place in the sixth series of the show.

The stunned 19-year-old thanked her fellow contestants and the crowd before Murdoch had to take back her words and make an awkward apology.

"I don't know what to say right now, I'm feeling a bit sick about this," Murdoch said.

"I'm so sorry, oh my god, I don't know what to say. This is a complete accident, I'm so sorry."

With her head in her hands, Murdoch then revealed the actual winner of the competition, as voted for by the public, was 18-year-old Gold Coast contestant Amanda Ware.

The 2010 live season finale was broadcast from Sydney's Luna Park.
