Murray's Brisbane ATP return anticipated

Brisbane International organisers expect Andy Murray to arrive next week as scheduled despite reports suggesting he is behind in his rehabilitation from a hip injury.

The former world No.1 opted against surgery on his troublesome hip earlier this year, instead curtailing his 2017 campaign and earmarking the season-opening tournament in Brisbane for an ATP comeback.

The 30-year-old played an exhibition match against Roger Federer at his Andy Murray Live charity event in Glasgow last month.

"My plan is to do a couple of weeks in Miami and then go to Australia very early, much earlier than I have done in the past," he said at the time.

"Things have been going pretty well so far in the rehab, but you just never know.

"I've been training for a few weeks now. Some days I've felt great and some days not so good. But I will come back when I'm ready and when I'm 100 per cent fit."

But the fact he is yet to leave his Wimbledon training base has raised eyebrows, with suggestions in UK media that he is not at the stage he needs to be to make a return.

The three-time grand slam winner has not played competitively since making a quarter-final exit at this year's Wimbledon.

A no-show at the Brisbane International, which will feature current No.1 Rafael Nadal, former No.3 Milos Raonic and combustible Australian No.21 Nick Kyrgios, would be a major blow ahead of the Australian Open next month.

But tournament organisers have dismissed the concern, saying they expect the Scot to arrive next week to train and promote the tournament with appearances around the Queensland capital city.

The Brisbane International begins on December 31, while the Australian Open starts on January 15.
