Murri families enjoy Christmas in Brisbane

Brisbane Murri families have enjoyed their annual Christmas gathering at the spiritual home of Musgrave Park.

About 300 Murris came together this weekend at Jagera Hall, where Black Santa handed out Christmas gifts and musical legends the Mop and the Drop Outs entertained the crowd.

The party was the first major event at Jagera Hall since the community met with the Brisbane City Council  about taking control of the heritage-listed building.

Albert Bowie, of the Musgrave Park Organising committee, said the day had a special significance.

"Today's day was about letting them see that there is activity already happening and people already using it from our community," he said.

"This is our area we love to bring our community."

Jagera Hall is used during NAIDOC week and Murri organisers hope it can be used more regularly for other events as well.

There are also plans to turn Jagera Hall into a cultural centre which could become an attraction for tourists.
