Museum fined $A47,000 over Dali images

A German museum has been fined $A47,883 for not having the rights to use six Salvador Dali images.

A Berlin museum devoted to Spanish surrealist Salvador Dali owes a foundation dedicated to the artist 30,000 euros ($A47,883) for incorrectly using his images in a video, a German court ruled.

Dali - The Exhibition at Potsdamer Platz had a video on YouTube from 2011 to 2015 that spliced together images of Dali's work with well-known city sites. It received 28,000 clicks while it was available.

But a high court in Munich ruled on Thursday that it did not have the rights to use six of the 13 images used and rejected the Berlin museum's argument that the video was an homage to Dali, not an advertisement for the museum.

The court told the museum that the fine was relatively light and advised it not to appeal. The Dali Foundation, based in Spain, had demanded 200,000 euros in damages.

"This seems very affordable to us," said the judge.

Carsten Kollmeier, who runs the museum, said there are at least five such cases between the foundation and his museum.

"We don't understand it," he said. "We're trying to do something good, and then they go and make our lives harder."
