Isaam Almaribe says his father, Mansor is suffering from diabetes, has back problems and heart disease.+

"His body's not good enough to handle the pressure expecially with that 500 lashes," he says.

"It's very scary, it's hard for me to say but he may not survive that."

Reports said Mansor Almaribe, 45, was detained in the city of Medina on November 14 while making the hajj pilgrimage and accused of insulting companions of the prophet Mohammed.

The family has seeked help from the Saudi Ambassador to Australia, Hassan Talat Nazeer who says Mansor Almaribe's sentence has been reduced.

"In terms of the lashes, well they are not really lashes," Mr Nazeer says.

"They are symbols of lashes…it's a touch of the skin, And also, the judge reduced the lashes from 500 to only 25."

Mr Almaribe and his family are preparing an appeal.

"It is very shocking for me and my family, it was the worst thing we've ever experienced," says Mr Almaribe.

"We're still shocked about what happened."
