Myer can withstand tough budget: Brookes

Myer boss Bernie Brookes says the department store giant is prepared for a potential drop off in consumer spending following this year's federal budget.

The Abbott government's first budget, to be handed down on May 13, is expected to include significant spending cuts and possible tax increases in an effort to cut the deficit.

But economists have warned some of the measures being flagged, including a one per cent of income "deficit levy" on those earning more than $80,000 could hurt consumer spending and slow economic growth.

Mr Brookes said the retailer will be able to navigate another downturn in sentiment.

"Whatever happens we've got a pretty robust plan," he said.

"We've gone through tough times with the global financial crisis and the fallout in the stockmarket so we are getting pretty good at working through if there is any good or bad news."

Mr Brookes was speaking after Myer announced a one per cent slide in its third quarter sales, which the retailer attributed to refurbishment work at three of its top stores.
