Mystery explosion rocks Qld suburb

An explosion on Queensland's Gold Coast appears to have been revellers letting off fireworks from a highrise hotel.

A bunch of revellers letting off fireworks from a highrise balcony have been blamed for an "explosion" which rocked Surfers Paradise on Queensland's Gold Coast.

Officers at Surfers Paradise Police Station heard the bang about 7.50pm on Wednesday but with no incidents reported to them, said they had no idea what the noise was.

However, local media reports later on Wednesday night said revellers may have launched a flare or a firecracker from a highrise hotel on beachside Hanlan Street.

The revellers reportedly launched the explosive off the balcony, with the sound reverberating through the precinct.
