N Korea sanctions could take years: Bishop

Foreign Minister Julie Bishop will discuss the threat of North Korea with members of the Trump administration in Washington.

Foreign Minister Julie Bishop has conceded it may take months or years for sanctions on North Korea to stop the regime's nuclear program.

Speaking ahead of meetings with members of the Trump administration in Washington, Ms Bishop insists the collective strategy to lure Pyongyang back to the negotiating table is to ramp up economic and diplomatic pressure.

"It's going to take some time, weeks, months, years for these economic sanctions to have the ultimate impact," she told ABC radio on Tuesday.
