Nathan Lyon is out to send a message to the Australian cricket selectors during the One-Day Cup after his axing for the tour of South Africa.
The country's most successful offspinner was dropped for the five ODIs against the Proteas in favour of legspinner Adam Zampa but has a chance to make a statement during the domestic 50-over tournament.
Lyon will turn out for NSW in their tournament opener against the Cricket Australia XI at Hurstville Oval in Sydney on Sunday and has a point to prove ahead of the Australian international summer.
"I was well notified about (being dropped) after the first Test in Sri Lanka," Lyon said.
"I know where I stand in one-day cricket and my goal is to still to play all forms of cricket for Australia and that's not going to change.
"I've got to go out and perform well for NSW and keep putting my hand up."
It's been a point of contention Lyon's entire career that he has never managed to break into the Australian limited overs sides, playing just 13 ODIs and one T20I.
Lyon will form a twin spin attack with Stephen O'Keefe during the Blues' One-Day Cup defence.
NSW will boast seven international representatives not including Aussie pacemen Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins who will be made available for the back half of the tournament.
Lyon is coming off a disappointing effort in Australia's three-Test loss to Sri Lanka and accepted criticism of the side's performance.
"We didn't perform well. We deserved it," Lyon said.
"We didn't play the Australian way, we didn't perform the way we need to as the Australian team needs to. That's part of our job - we're going to get criticised and we need to get better at that."
