Nation commemorates first bombing of Darwin

Crowds gathered in Darwin, in Australia's Northern Territory, to commemorate the first official bombing of Darwin 70 years ago.

The first attack on Darwin by the Japanese on February 19, 1942, destroyed much of it's infrastructure and was followed by further raids across Northern Australia.

The bombing brought Australia into World War Two and was the first time the country was attacked in war.

Sirens rang out in Darwin on Sunday morning, followed by a re-enactment of the attack and a laying of flowers at Darwin Cenotaph to commemorate the anniversary.
