Nation-wide business scam costly in Tas

A Tasmanian business has handed over almost $100,000 to fraudsters as part of a nation-wide cyber scam, police say.

Tasmanian businesses have paid almost a quarter of a million dollars in the past month to cyber fraudsters who police allege are running an Australia-wide racket.

In one instance a company in northern Tasmania paid nearly $100,000 when the office manager received emails, claiming to be from the holidaying boss, asking for money, Sergeant Gen Hickman said on Thursday.

"The requests often relate to actual work or services that the company has contracted but the payment details are fraudulent," she said, adding that the scam has targeted businesses including voluntary organisations.
