An advisory council tasked with developing an Australian national brand should be finished by the end of the year, Tourism Minister Steven Ciobo says.

The group will work with government and industry to develop the concept, which will be used to promote Australian products, services and experiences.

"I hope that they will have worked together with our creative industry to develop a great brand for Australia, something we can market Australia to the world with," he told reporters in Adelaide on Wednesday.

The council is made up of eleven business and community leaders, each invited to join by Mr Ciobo, and their finished product will be used to promote sectors including education, foreign investment, tourism and exports.

Mr Ciobo said he hoped to replicate the success of other national brands, including that of New Zealand.

"We've only got to look across the ditch at our Kiwi cousins to see their 100 Per Cent Pure campaign, which has now been in existence for more than a decade," he said.

"I want to make sure that Australia as a strong brand too."

Mr Ciobo visited Adelaide to chair a meeting of Australia's trade, tourism and investment ministers, including South Australian Minister for Tourism David Ridgway.

Mr Ridgway supported the idea of a national brand, but said ministers at the meeting had discussed whether states should continue to use their own identity as a marketing tool.

"I've been overseas at expos and trade expos where other countries do it much better than us," he said.
