The western New South Wales city of Broken Hill has become the first city in Australia to be included on the National Heritage List.

The birthplace of the multinational mining company BHP, Broken Hill has lobbied for nearly 10 years to get on the list of places deemed to contribute to the national identity.

The inclusion of Broken Hill on the list could help attract more tourists from across Australia and the world to the remote city, boosting the local economy.

Mayor Wincen Cuy tells Ron Sutton the listing means recognition of the city of 18,500 people as a place of importance.
