Nationals' roles in the Turnbull ministry

The Nationals have made inroads in the reshuffle of the front bench by Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull.

HOW THE NATIONALS FIT INTO THE MINISTRY

CABINET

BARNABY JOYCE

Australia's new deputy prime minister had his choice of portfolio but decided to stick to his rural roots and keep agriculture and water.

FIONA NASH

The new deputy Nationals leader is now the sixth woman in cabinet and, like her leader, her portfolios are keenly focused on the Nationals heartland - regional development, regional communication and rural health.

NIGEL SCULLION

The Northern Territory senator will continue to drive the government's indigenous affairs policy.

DARREN CHESTER

Another new cabinet minister, the Victorian MP takes over infrastructure and transport from retiring leader Warren Truss.

OUTER MINISTRY

MATT CANAVAN

The Rockhampton-based senator has been given the role of northern Australia minister, working with cabinet minister Josh Frydenberg.

ASSISTANT MINISTERS

MICHAEL MCCORMACK

After a short-lived tilt to challenge Joyce, he moves from assistant minister to the deputy PM to assistant minister for defence.

KEITH PITT

Becomes the assistant minister to Deputy PM Joyce. The member for Hinkler, which includes the city of Bundaberg and neighbours Warren Truss' electorate of Wide Bay, has a farming and business background.

OUT

LUKE HARTSUYKER

Axed from the front bench. The only unannounced casualty of the reshuffle.
