New South Wales Police say every Australian capital city and some regional centres have been hit by a nationwide credit card skimming scam, which has netted more than $50 million in NSW alone.

Six people have been arrested in NSW in relation to the scam, which police say involves criminals committing armed robberies to get hold of EFTPOS machines.

Prime Minister Kevin Rudd has described the crimes as "highly disturbing".

"We are taking advice from our own authorities on this question at present in close liaison with various state authorities as well," Mr Rudd told reporters in Adelaide.

Mr Rudd said he wanted to be fully briefed on the scam.

"We will take necessary action in concert with the state and territory authorities for all Australians," he said.
