Prime Minister Tony Abbott insists claims that asylum seekers have been water-boarded and subjected to other forms of torture at the Nauru detention centre are false.

An unnamed Wilson Security guard made the explosive allegation in a submission to a parliamentary inquiry examining abuse at the centre, which was released late on Friday.

"They're absolutely false and if people have evidence to the contrary, let it be produced," Mr Abbott told reporters in Brisbane on Sunday.
