Naval shipbuilding plan in numbers

The federal government is keen to spruik its national shipbuilding plan as defence industry leaders gather in Sydney for a special maritime and naval showcase.

BUILDING NAVAL VESSELS THAT WILL FLOAT AND SUBMERGE

* The federal government will spend $89 billion on building 12 submarines, nine frigates and 12 offshore patrol vessels for the Australian navy as well as 19 Pacific patrol boats to be given to neighbouring countries.

* There's $1.3 billion to upgrade the Osborne Naval Shipyard in Adelaide and the plant at Henderson in Western Australia.

* Adelaide will get a $25 million naval shipbuilding college to train workers.

JOBS BONANZA

* SA's shipbuilding workforce is expected to swell to more than 5000 by 2026.

* Employment in the defence supply chain and allied industries is expected to create another 10,000 jobs.

TIME LINE

* Offshore patrol vessels construction will begin in Adelaide in 2018 and then move to Perth once work begins on the new frigates in 2020.

* Construction of French-designed submarines is expected to begin in Adelaide in 2022.

* The Pacific patrol boats will be built in Perth from 2020.

MOVE OVER

* The 12 new subs will replace the troubled fleet of six Collins Class submarines.

* The new frigates will replace the Anzac Frigates.
