Navy member dies in bike accident

A navy competitor has died while taking part in a defence cycling carnival in Canberra.

A 46-year-old member of the navy has died in a mountain biking accident while competing in a defence cycling carnival in Canberra.

ACT Policing and Defence say the incident occurred at about 2.25pm (AEDT) on Friday while the man from Nowra, on the NSW south coast, was competing in the Australian Defence Cycling Club event on Mount Stromlo.

The man was seriously injured and transferred by ambulance to Canberra Hospital, where he died from his injuries.

"The member's family has been notified and is receiving all appropriate support services," a statement from the Department of Defence said in a statement.

"The Navy extends its sincerest condolences to the member's family and his friends following this very sad and tragic accident."

ACT Policing said they are investigating the death.
