Maintenance works on two of the Australian Navy's troubled amphibious warships will wrap up this week.

HMAS Adelaide and HMAS Canberra have been docked in Sydney on and off since March because of a problem with their propulsion pods.

HMAS Adelaide will leave dry dock on Tuesday for sea trials before returning to full operations over the next few months, while HMAS Canberra will return to sea on Thursday.

It will participate in the Talisman Sabre military exercise with the US and other nations over the next few weeks.

The ships, which cost about $1 billion each, were out of action during Cyclone Debbie recovery efforts in March. The landing ship HMAS Choules was sent to north Queensland instead.

Chief of Navy Tim Barrett told a Senate hearing in May the pod issue wasn't necessarily a design flaw in the landing helicopter dock vessels, but rather a problem with oil contamination.
