Australia's elite young basketballers will work with overseas talent when the NBA Global Academy opens in Canberra.
Basketball Australia says the NBA's brand of education, currently established in three cities in China, won't undercut its own Centre of Excellence programs.
That's despite the two programs sharing space at the Australian Institute of Sport.
Under-16 and under-18s will work at the Global Academy, giving them opportunities to train and play abroad and learn life skills.
Previously operated by the AIS, the Centre of Excellence has produced top-level players Lauren Jackson, Andrew Bogut, Patty Mills, Penny Taylor and Dante Exum.
And the NBA's arrival will see Australia host some of the world's best prospects.
"NBA Global Academy will allow top prospects from around the world to train with and compete against their peers in a structured environment under the supervision of NBA-trained coaches and in collaboration with BA's internationally recognised coaches," said NBA spokesman Brooks Meek said.
The NBA also reportedly has plans to expand its Global Academy operations into Africa and India.
