NBA commissioner Adam Silver says he'd love to bring an NBA game to Australia.
But the dream of many Australian basketball fans to sit courtside and watch Stephen Curry, LeBron James, Andrew Bogut or other stars playing with their NBA teams in Australia appears some while away.
"I think it will be something we'll look at," Silver told reporters before game one of the NBA Finals between Bogut's Golden State Warriors and another Aussie, Matthew Dellavadova's Cleveland Cavaliers.
"It's obviously a long trip, but we'd love to bring teams back there and love to play a game in Australia."
Silver gave no indication a game was in the works, despite the NBA taking teams to China, Brazil, Germany, Spain, the Philippines, Turkey, Japan, Korea and other nations in recent years.
The commissioner also acknowledged "a real surge in popularity" in Australia for NBA League pass subscriptions that allows Australians to watch NBA games live online.
Bogut, who fears the NBA is missing out on an opportunity to expand the league in his homeland, has been vocal about taking the Warriors to Australia.
The Warriors played two games in China in 2013.
Other sports organisations view Australia as fresh territory to expand their fan base with Major League Baseball's Los Angeles Dodgers and Arizona Diamondbacks starting the 2014 season with two matches in Sydney.
