NBL grants licence for 2019 expansion team

Expansion of the NBL has taken a step forward with the awarding of a team licence to Swansea City co-owner Romie Chaudhari.

Melbourne is the frontrunner to be the location for a new NBL team, which will be part of an expanded competition from the 2019-20 season.

The NBL on Friday announced Romie Chaudhari co-owner of EFL Championship Club Swansea City, had been awarded a licence.

The competition presently contains eight clubs and NBL owner Larry Kestelman is known to be keen on a second team in Melbourne,

NBL chief executive Jeremy Loeliger said there was huge interest from around the country.

Tasmania is believed to be interested, along with Gold Coast, NSW, Perth and Townsville, with all of those areas having had an NBL club at some stage in the competition's 40-year history.

Chaudhari and the NBL will work together to determine the location.

Asked about a potential home for his club, Chaudhari said: "I've got to make sure that our players have a great place to train and to play.

"In order for us to be competitive in the league in our first year the infrastructure has to be right."

Loeliger said key elements in the decision would be training and game day infrastructure, fan interest and support from commercial partners.

He thought there was room for even more growth in the competition.

Los Angeles-based entrepreneur Chaudhari already owns a small stake in NBL club New Zealand Breakers.

The NBL is in negotiations for a new television deal and wants to secure both free-to-air and pay TV coverage.
