All Australians will have the national broadband network connected or know when they will be connected by the 2016 election.

Communications Minister Malcolm Turnbull told the coalition party room on Tuesday the government had improved the introduction of the NBN.

He said that as of the September 2013 election, only one per cent of premises had been connected but this would rise to 40 per cent by the 2016 poll.

But those who were not connected would have an indication of their connection date by the next election.
