NBN overhauls pricing structure

NBN, the company building the national broadband network, is overhauling its pricing structure to make it more attractive to broadband firms.

The company building the national broadband network is revamping its wholesale pricing structure for internet service retailers in a bid to allow greater flexibility in retail offerings.

NBN says it will be moving to a new retailer-based model for its connectivity virtual circuit (CVC) fee - a flat charge levied on retail service providers (RSPs) per unit of bandwidth they buy on the national broadband network.

The new model will calculate the discount based on an individual RSP's average, as opposed to an industry average model used currently.

It automatically cuts the the price of CVC as the average amount of CVC per end user increases.

NBN chief customer officer John Simon said the change is intended to deliver greater pricing certainty to RSPs, better manage their costs and support higher customer usage of the nbn network.

"It will also provide further scope for retailers to differentiate their offerings, which in turn will promote competition and assist consumers in accessing a wider choice of broadband plans," Mr Simon said on Friday in a statement.

The new model will apply the discount on a monthly basis across all technologies, except satellite, from June 1.
