Neck injury killed boy on US water slide

Kansas police say the 10-year-old son of a US lawmaker died from a fatal neck injury while riding on 51.2 metre-high thrill seeker's water slide.

Authorities say the 10-year-old son of a US lawmaker who died while riding a Kansas City water slide had suffered a fatal neck injury.

Details remain murky about what happened to Caleb Thomas Schwab on the 51.2 metre high "Verruckt" water slide at the Schlitterbahn Waterpark in Kansas City, Kansas.

But police issued a statement on Monday saying the boy died from a fatal neck injury at 2.30pm (local time) on Sunday while riding on the slide with two women, neither of whom were related to him.

The women suffered minor facial injuries which required hospital treatment, police said.

Emergency crews found the boy dead in a pool at the end of the slide when the arrived, a statement said.

Schlitterbahn issued a statement late on Monday saying it was "deeply and intensely saddened for the Schwab family and all who were impacted by the tragic accident".

The park is tentatively scheduled to reopen on Wednesday, but the Verruckt ride will remain closed, it said.

Police spokesman Cameron Morgan said the investigation is being treated as a civil matter, rather than a criminal one.

Schlitterbahn spokeswoman Winter Prosapio declined to be interviewed on Monday, but has previously said Caleb was at the park with family members.

The water slide is certified by Guinness World Records as the world's tallest with riders sitting in multi-person rafts which are sent down a 17-storey drop.

The park's website says riders are then blasted back up a second massive hill and then sent down yet another gut wrenching drop.

Each rider must be at least 137 centimetres tall.

According to rules sent to the media in 2014, riders had to be at least 14 years old, but that requirement is no longer listed on the park's website.

Caleb's parents - Republican state Representative Scott Schwab and his wife, Michele - have requested privacy as the family grieves, saying in a statement on Sunday that "since the day he was born, (Caleb) brought abundant joy to our family and all those he came in contact with".
