At least 22 people were killed and 23 injured when a bus crashed in eastern Nepal, police says.

The bus went off a road and careened more than 100m down a hill on Tuesday. The injured victims were airlifted to Kathmandu hospitals.

The bus was on its way from Diktel, in Khotang district, to Kathmandu, more than 250km away.

Police were yet to determine how many people were travelling on the bus, but witnesses said it was overcrowded.

The bus swerved when a section of the road crumbled away but could not avoid going over the edge, witnesses were quoted as saying by local media.
