Netflix executives say they will happily add GST to the cost of their service - if the federal government makes it legal.

In a statement to AAP on Thursday, Netflix US head office said: "Netflix has been and will be compliant with all applicable laws and regulations, and we pay taxes as required under local and national law".

In what has been dubbed the "Netflix" tax the government is believed to be considering making movie and music downloads susceptible to GST.

The move would rake in billions of dollars for government coffers but ultimately make entertainment more expensive for consumers.
