A new school in the Adelaide CBD will open its doors for the first time, as more than 270,000 South Australian students begin the 2019 year.
Adelaide Botanic High School - the latest addition to the state's 513 public schools - will on Tuesday welcome 350 year eight and nine students.
The $100 million city school will eventually grow to 1250 enrolments by the 2022 school year.
Its campus is located next to the planned Australian Space Agency, and linked to the University of South Australia by a glass atrium.
Education Minister John Gardner wished all students a smooth start to the school year.
"This is an exciting time of year, especially for those families with a child starting school for the first time or transitioning into high school," he said.
"Our ambition is to provide every child, in every class, in every school and preschool in South Australia with the support they need to best help them fulfil their potential.
Of 176,000 public students due to start this week, 13,500 will begin their schooling in reception.
Another 95,000 students will attend Catholic and independent schools in 2019, while an estimated 17,000 children will start at one of the state's 404 preschools.
Mr Gardner also highlighted the important role played by staff returning to classrooms.
"I want to thank every one of the educators and support staff across the state working in schools this year - they play a critical role in achieving our ambition to deliver the best education system in Australia," he said.
