Dad Jean Luc and son Jerome crew the 41 Sud, a yacht that's competing in this year's Sydney to Hobart race.

Daughter Valerie is taking a year off from the regatta, after learning she's pregnant, but she's aboard to help the rest of her family prepare.

Even mum Veronique gets involved, running the administration side of things from Noumea.

Skipper Jean Luc is confident the yacht will do well in the prestigious race, despite having heavy competition from wealthier countries.

The 41 Sud is one of 22 international yachts taking part in this year's Sydney to Hobart.

Other countries involved include New Zealand, Great Britain and the United States.

It's the fourth time the New Caledonian boat has undergone the gruelling race. Jean Luc also competed in the 1998, 2008 and 2009 races.

The 12-metre Archambault's best placing was 41st overall.

There are nearly 100 yachts in this year's race.
