New expenses watchdog for MPs begins work

A new independent authority set up to oversee federal politicians' expenses will begin operating on Saturday.

Federal politicians will face closer scrutiny of their expenses under a new watchdog.

The five-member Independent Parliamentary Expenses Authority officially begins its work on July 1.

The statutory body was announced by Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull in January following the entitlements scandal that led to the resignation of then-health minister Sussan Ley.

It cleared parliament in February with Labor's support.

"For the first time, Australia will have an authority operating at arm's length from the government to monitor and report on the way all members and senators are spending money," Special Minister of State Scott Ryan said in a statement on Friday.

The independent authority will oversee the travel expenses - including allowances - of parliamentarians and their staff.

It will also publish reports and audits relating to all work expenses and advise politicians on what they can and can't claim.

"Australians rightly expect that politicians spend taxpayers' money carefully, ensuring at all times that their work expenditure represents an ethical, prudent and cost effective use of public resources," Senator Ryan said.
