Hoffenheim striker Sandro Wagner is among six debutants named by Germany coach Joachim Loew in a 23-man squad for next month's Confederations Cup in Russia.

Loew is resting stars Sami Khedira, Mesut Oezil, Toni Kroos, Mats Hummels, Thomas Mueller and Jerome Boateng for the June 17-July 2 tournament.

Others like captain Manuel Neuer, Mario Goetze, Benedikt Howedes and Ilkay Guendogan are injured, Marco Reus and Mario Gomez were not picked, and striker Max Kruse not recalled.

The squad, which is also for a June 6 friendly in Denmark and a World Cup qualifier against San Marino four days later, features only three players who won the World Cup in 2014 - Julian Draxler, Matthias Ginter and Shkodran Mustafi.

Wagner, 29, is joined by Hoffenheim team-mate Kerem Demirbay, Lars Stindl of Borussia Moenchengladbach, Hertha Berlin's Marvin Plattenhardt, Amin Younes of Dutch club Ajax and RB Leipzig's Diego Demme.

"Sandro Wagner brings a special flavour to the team. He has scored many goals in the past two years in the Bundesliga," Loew told a news conference.

Wagner had 14 goals for Darmstadt in the 2015-16 season and 11 for Hoffenheim in the current campaign which ends on Saturday.

"It was always my dream to play for the DFB [German Football Federation] team. I am looking forward to my time with the team," Wagner said.

Also picked was Leipzig's Timo Werner, the best German scorer in the Bundesliga with 21 goals.

Other youngsters who have already featured in Loew's team - such as Jonathan Tah, Serge Gnabry and Max Meyer - were chosen for the under-21 European Championship in Poland which takes place in the second half of June and where Germany also want to do well.

"There is no perfect solution. Some players would have been good for both teams," Loew said.

Loew's heavily depleted squad will gather on June 4 for what the coach named "a summer of special challenges.

"The Confed Cup is a stopover where we will gain experience. Above all stands the 2018 World Cup and the road to [the final in] Moscow. The World Cup is the biggest tournament."

Loew's newcomers have the chance to make an impression at the Confederations Cup where Germany in the group stage play Australia on June 19 in Sochi, Chile three days later in Kazan and Cameroon on June 25 back in Sochi.

And Loew dismissed all suggestions that his team won't be as competitive as at past tournaments owing to the big changes.

"We will from June 4 prepare as professionally as we always do ahead of Euros and World Cups," Loew said.

Squad: Bernd Leno, Marc-Andre ter Stegen, Kevin Trapp; Matthias Ginter, Jonas Hector, Benjamin Henrichs, Joshua Kimmich, Shkodran Mustafi, Marvin Plattenhardt, Antonio Ruediger, Niklas Suele; Julian Brandt, Emre Can, Julian Draxler, Leon Goretzka, Sebastian Rudy, Leroy Sane, Sandro Wagner, Lars Stindl, Kerem Demirbay, Amin Younes, Diego Demme, Timo Werner.
