Driverless vehicles will be managed through a new federal government authority, with the industry expected to generate billions in revenue over the next decade.
Infrastructure Minister Michael McCormack will on Thursday announce the new Office of Future Transport Technologies, which will cost $9.7 million to establish.
He is expected to tell a Roads Australia conference in Sydney the technologies could generate more than $16 billion in revenue by 2025.
"While representing an emerging business opportunity for the national economy, these technologies also have great potential to reduce the $27 billion cost of road crashes in Australia each year," the Nationals leader says.
The office will work across governments to ensure automated vehicles are safe and consider infrastructure needs.
