Star backrower Aidan Guerra admits even he doesn't know what to expect from the new-look Sydney Roosters this NRL season.

Minus off-season losses Michael Jennings, Rogers Tuivasa-Sheck and James Maloney the Roosters face South Sydney on Sunday at Allianz Stadium also without injured pair Jared Waerea-Hargreaves and Boyd Cordner.

Mitchell Pearce will be sidelined too, after being outed for eight games for his Australia Day shenanigans.

That leaves the likes of NRL debutants Jayden Nikorima, Latrell Mitchell and Jackson Hastings, who has played just 19 first grade games, to help spark the Tricolours against their archrivals.

"We have a lot to learn about ourselves, it has been pretty well publicised that we are a new look team but we have a core group there that has stuck solid," Guerra said.

"It is a bit of an unknown for us but we are taking it on.

"Our halves are very youthful, they have a lot of enthusiasm about the way they play, off the cuff, he is pretty quick little Jaydo so we will see.

"We have played just the one trial against St Helens so we don't know where we are."

What Guerra does know is what to expect from returning Rabbitohs star Sam Burgess.

"Week in, week out he is one of the toughest players in the comp when he was here before and he will benefit from the year away and come back fresher," Guerra said.

"We can expect him to be tough and hard and we are preparing to play Sam Burgess at his best."
