New Perth schools as student numbers swell

Schools are being added this year to Perth's outer suburbs as populations surge in those areas.

More students are enrolled in West Australian schools this year and new public educational facilities are opening to cater for the expanding population in Perth's outer suburbs.

At the beginning of last year, 455,333 students were enrolled in the state's public schools, from kindergarten through to year 12.

A Department of Education spokeswoman said the 2019 estimate would be released on Monday, showing a moderate increase in student numbers, ahead of officially confirmed figures in March.

In Perth, three new schools are:

* Coastal Lakes College in Lakelands and Ridge View Secondary College in Baldivis, which will this year cater to Year 7, expanding through to Year 12 by 2024

* Grandis Primary School in Banksia Grove, which will this year cater to kindergarten and pre-primary students, expanding to Year 1 through to Year 6 in 2020

The following metropolitan schools are expanding from kindergarten and pre-primary to all years up to Year 6:

* Aspiri Primary School in Piara Waters

* Aveley North Primary School in Aveley

* Oakwood Primary School in Meadow Springs

* Southern Grove Primary School in Southern River

Nationals MP Vince Catania has criticised the Labor state government for its "metro-centric" spending priorities while Hedland Senior High School in the Pilbara was "falling apart".

"This government is spending a fortune on their Perth election commitments while letting regional communities suffer," Mr Catania said.

Students in country areas made up 21.4 per cent of the state's total pupil population last year.
